READING

So we are now studying the Reading module of the IELTS test. Tell me what you know already about this test. How many reading texts? How much time do you have in total? Should you read every word first?

21 comments:

  1. Hi friends!

After 2 weeks, we are going in the Reading Module. This is my favourite part among 4 modules of IELTS test. :-)

All the answers are in the 1st page of the Reading copy that we received at the begining of this week....

Reading module lasts 60 minutes,is in 3 sections and with a total of 40 questions.

Regarding the Reading Test, there are something that we should concern such as:

    1. Write the answers on the answer sheet
(some time, we forgot and made a mistake with this thing)
    2. Do not read the reading passage first.
(by this way we forgot the need to predict information) -> Always have a reason to read a passage before we begin to do so. Have a question in our mind - something we are looking for - otherwise we will not be managing our time well.
It is very important with The Reading Sub-Test
An advised period of time is usually given in which to complete each of the three sections of the test. Keep an eye on the time as we progress through the Reading Sub-test, and as we complet each question group. Try ourself to make sure that we stop answering questions when the advised time is up. Move on to the next group of questions even if we have not finished those questions. If we do not, we will probably not complete as many questions as we could. Remember that we are in charge of managing our time in the Reading Sub-test.
    3. Read the test in a logical order.
All of the below should be quickly examined before we read the passage in any detail. It will make scanning the passage much easier, and will help us to predict a large amount of information:
the TITLE -> the HEADING -> BOLD PRINTED WORDS -> a PICTURE -> the INSTRUCTIONS -> What kind of ANSWERS -> the EXAMPLE -> and finally, the QUESTIONS
    4. Consider the passage layout.( all the types of the test were given for us in the 2nd page of our Reading module).
    5.Scan the reading passage.
    6.Read the Topic sentences first
( Remember a wise when searching the topic sentence as a particular search order: check the 1st sentence -> then the 2nd sentence -> and then the last sentence.
    7.Read around the keywords/phrases

    ......

  11. Hi classmates!

Today is the hard pratice of Reading Module with type 1 (Multiple choice question) and type 2 (Identifying information), type 3 ( Identifying Writer's views or claims) and type 4 (Matching information), even mention a litle about type 5 ( Matching Headings) but it is appears that interesed in our practice. It is so easy for us to catching the wrong way of answer if we do not take care of "the key words". wow, why it is so yummy with me at all.

Thanks so much for your hard and beautiful teaching us today, Mrs.Michelle,

  12. Hi friends,

Pls.kindly accompany me for reviewing some activities we done this morning.

Reading type 1 - Multiple choice question activity.
1.Stop the confusion offering by some distracted answer choices with look at the Q first, after that cover up the answer choices A, B, C,D.... Remember just focus only on the Q stem and find and underline the key words in it.
    2. Keeping the key words in our mind, skim and scan the reading text for the relevant part which contains information about Q.
    3. Still keeping the answer choices A-... covered up, try to complete the question stem using all the relevant information in the text. Use our own words to summarise and paraphrase in our mind what is said in the text.
    4. Next, uncover the answer choices for Q. Based on the information we have just summarised and paraphrased, choose the answer choice which is correct. Remember that there is only that is totally correct and the others are there to distract us. Try to explain by ourself why we chose the answer like we explain to the partner.
finally, Refer back to the text as necessary to justify our answer.

    Cheers,

  13. Hi friends,

We are continuing to Reading type 2 (Identifying information)

    1. Read the statement.
    2. Discuss by ourself which key words in the statement we could scan the text for.
    3. Remember synonyms or paraphrasing might be used. Try to brainstorm some different ways of expressing this same information.
    4. Start at the beginning of the text and scan the text until we find the part which this statement refers to. Underline the sentence(s). Look at which words from the statement did we find in the text.
    Cheers,

  14. Hi partners,

How about the Reading type 3 (Identifying Writer's views/claims)

1.Apply the process which used as in type 2 first.
2.Look at the key to worksheet 1. Compare our understand sections in the text with the B sentences in the key. Did we find the same ones?
    3. Read each pair of sentences in the key carefully. Now, by ourself answer with 3 options
    a. Does sentence B have the same meaning as sentence A? --> this means that we answer Yes/True
    b. Does sentence B contain some information that contradicts sentence A? --> this means that we answer No/False.
    c. Is the main point of the two sentences completely different? --> this means we answer Not Given.

Remember that always read the instructions carefully to see whether we should be answering Yes,No and Not given or True,False and Not given.

    Cheers,

  15. Hi friends,

Today, my group (Mr.Quan and I) have read about the title - today we can "talk" to the persistent vegetative state patient-

That topic commentates about the research was conducted by one Cambridge uninversity team with the vegetative state patients by using the MRI scan shows different responses in the brain after they are asked with different questions.
This technique is using a scanning technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the patient's brain activity was mapped while he was asked to answer "yes" or "no" to simple specific questions such as "Is your father's name Thomas?" "Do you like dog?",...

With the astounding result, not only did these scans tell us that the patient was not in a vegetative state but, more importantly, it provided the patient with a way of communicating his/her thoughts to the outside world.

This finding has enormous implications for care of vegetative patients.

It is believed that in early days we hope to develop some techniques to allow some patients to express their feelings and thoughts, control their environment and increase their quality of life.

That is something about our reading passages on this morning. Hope that you will be interested in this topic.

    Cheers.

( P.S. Thanks so much to my partner-Quan- for your admirable cooperate this morning)

    *Sharing with the new word
    "persistent vegetative state"
means that a condition in which someone's brain is so damaged that they cannot move or talk, and their condition is unlikely to improve - adduced in Longman dictionary.

  16. Hi everyone!
Today I read a newspaper about neurology and the research of Cambridge university. The article do some study on people have brain damage by unexpected events.

Professional has use the MRI machine to detect the signal on the brains of patients and some volunteers. Patients are in vegetative state ( people who are unconscious, live like a plant) actually can respond to yes, no or certain question. This is an astounding discovery about neurology.

The machine had taken pictures of brain activities when doctor ask patients questions. Some brain scan pictures show the same area and signal of brain when patients are asked about same sorts of information. Those diagnoses can help patient's relative have chance to communicate with them and this also can help.
Base on this wonderful turn up, patients' vegetative stage may show their thought by using the computer system in the future.

  17. G' day my friends,
Today my group (Tran & I) have read about the topic "Lab ruts" in New Scientist magazine. It is interesting and I would like to show you its ideas.
As the writer said: "superhuman powers of persistence can pave the way to scientific glory", I can see that is truth. Because the main ideas of the whole paragraphs show the reader more examples about the persistence of scientists- the main thing help them to success. Like Marie and Pierre Curie, they took tonnes of reside from uranium ore and processed it by hand. This work took them more than 4 years to done it. After all, they got 100 milligrams of radium chloride. But the most important thing reader concern is the work they did everyday, Marie just described:" it was exhausting work to move the containers about, to transfer the liquids, and to stir for hours at a time, with an iron bar, the boiling material in the cast-iron basin". Over 4 years with this hard and repetitious work like that but they actually enjoyed their work. This mean if the scientists at the top of their game, they will rarely become jaded even the work con take them many years.
This is also one of great examples in this topic and I think it may give enough information to prove that patient is the main factor can lead to successful of scientist.
( Hope u can understand, even I absolutely can not understand all about it...... thanks :D )

  18. Hi my friends,
Today my group (Hoa & I) have read about the article about technology of internet in New Scientist magazine. After finished our reading, we would like to show you our main idea. We hope you will understand more this information.

The article said about the technologies of Internet upgrade ahead as congestion looms by Jeff Hecht. If there was a massive downloads, it is effected a clog the net’s fibre-optic backbone, and smart transmission technologies are received the data flowing again. Furthermore, it took about four seconds to sent the contents of a full DVD by the fastest Internet technology. Afterwards, it clearly predicted that high-speed internet would have enough capacity to satisfy bandwidth people in the future. In a decade ago, there was a boom of dotcom companies in the internet in order to process an enormous glut in capacity. Nowadays, the laser beam technology has many limitations. However, there were some problems facing the ultra-fast backbone as a noise has dealed with the amount of gigabits channels are transmitted through the same fibre, and the number of bits systems has stretch more than before signals are lost. Finally, internet, which has the same fibre network, will experience more traffic.

  19. Hi everyone!
Yesterday my group (Dan & I) have read about the topic "Lab ruts" in New Scientist magazine. It is interesting but I spent for long time to understand.
The article took about the passion for research of Scientists, because they consider: Science is exciting. Science is cutting-edge. Science is fun. For every researcher who has ridden to triumph on the back of scientific perseverance, many have been carried away into obscurity. Especially worthy of honour in this regard is George Ungar, who claimed that memory could be transferred between animals by sucking out some of one creature’s brain and sticking it into another. In one experiment published in Natire in 1968, he and his group went to the length of using electric shocks to train 4000 rats to fear the dark. They then dissected the animals, pulped their brains and used various methods to leach out some of the chemicals from the resulting goo. Mice injected with these rat extracts, Ungar reported, chose to spend less time in the dark than normal, non-ratted mice. But the legion of rats was not enough for Ungar. He went onto train 17,000 goldfish to distinguish colors, then painstaking dissected them and pureed their brains in the name of science. Yet in the end it came to nothing. When other groups failed to reproduce Ungar’s results, the idea of memory transfer became discredited. Beside that, there are another Scientists they spent long time for their research. Like Marie and Pierre Curie (my partner wrote above) and Henrietta Leavitt. The research had been successes by their strove and patient. They were very happy as Marie wrote “We lived in a preoccupation as complete as that of a dream”. Therefore the author this article wrote “Superhuman powers of persistence can pave the way to scientific glory”
This is one of typical example I read in the topic “Lab Ruts”.

  20. Homework 19/05/2010 with the answers as below:

    23-H (freight)
    24-B (components)
    25-C (container ships)
    26-I (fares).

That will be with the finished passage:

Modern cargo-handling methods have had a significant effect on FREIGHT as the business of moving freight around the world becomes increasingly streamlined. Manufacturers of computers, for instance, are able to import COMPONENTS from overseas, rather than having to rely on a local supplier. The introduction of CONTAINER SHIPS has meant that bulk cargo can be safely and efficiently moved over long distances. While international shipping is now efficient, there is still a need for gorvenments to reduce FARES in order to free up the domestic cargo sector.

    Cheers.
